The Enneagram is a system which divides all human behavior into nine personality divisions. Your main type is whichever of those nine behaviors you use most, in your case Type 5w6. Your mean type, Type 6w5, is who you are on average, based on the sum influence of all nine behaviors.
Most Enneagram books and tests focus on main type and use an additional "variant" classification (instead of mean type) to account for the influence of all nine behavior types. This is the same thing as mean typing, except instead of 9 delineations, there are only three. Based on your test results your variant is Self Preservational. So when reading other Enneagram books or websites refer to the Type 5w6, Self Preservational variant descriptions.
Everyone utilizes (and should utilize) all nine behaviors to some degree, the problem is how to choose the right behavior in each situation. Ideal decision making is undermined by irrational habits and irrational motives. (Habit is how you do things and motive is why you do them.) The ideal is to prioritize intelligence/knowledge (type 5 behavior) in choosing how to act and why to act. If your main type and mean type are both five, your habits and motives are usually driven by intelligence/knowledge. For any other type combo, your decision making is compromised to some degree by irrationality. The root cause of irrationality is motivation based more on feelings and instincts than knowledge. Main type / mean type 1,2,3,4s are motivated more by feelings (desire for security) and 6,7,8,9s are motivated more by instincts (desire for pleasure). Even if your main type is 5, if you have a non 5 mean type, underneath the surface of your rational manner lies an overall irrational motivation driven by instinct/feelings (extreme example: serial killer).
Intelligent thinking exemplified by the scientific method (learn/observe, theorize, experiment, analyze results, modify - repeat cycle) is the spine of progressive human evolution and becoming more fivish means applying that system to your own life. Choosing to always be a tough person (type 8), nice person (type 9), insecure person (type 4), reduces your options and compromises your problems solving ability. Remember, our thinking ability has taken us from stone age cave people to abstract thinking creative beings, so listen to your feelings but use your mind to determine what makes sense.
main type / mean type motivations
1 - perfectionism to attract love
2 - helpfulness to attract love
3 - achievement to attract love
4 - self definition to attract love
5w4 - intelligence to attract freedom
5w6 - intelligence to acquire freedom
6 - attentiveness to acquire pleasure
7 - experience/fun to acquire pleasure
8 - control to acquire pleasure
9 - peace to acquire pleasure

5/4 - uses intelligence to define themself (brooding writer) 8/2 - uses control to help others (ceo of humanitarian organization) 3/7 - uses achievement to experience more of life (travel magazine journalist)
4/6 - uses self definition to be more secure (studio musician)
1/9 - uses perfectionism to have a more peaceful life (librarian)

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Sister Hazel or anything, but I just heard (on Radio@AOL) the opening of their live song on some KFOG CD and it was really good. The rest isn't as good, but it gets better at the end.
Also, I've been sending people links to Foamy's Rant. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with a working Flash Plugin, because I'm the only one who can see it. I was cracking up as I listened, though.
Let's see what else I can throw in here...
Thursday was Daniel Pearl Music Day I will try to withhold any comments on how lame this is, I'll probably fail. Anyway, I noticed that there are concerts scheduled for his birthday, which would have been Oct. 10th. Also, Elton John is on the honorary comittee. Elton John was on Sharon Osbourne's show on Oct. 10th because that was Sharon's birthday. I wonder if he mentioned it. It was taped the week before. I wonder if he did a concert last Thursday. I saw James Taylor last Wednesday. He said he was glad he lived in Massachusetts.

To protect the innocent.
Alright, the easiest way to tell this story is to make up names.
My sister had her wisdom teeth out (a good story in itself). Knowing that I would have an extra ticket to the UCLA game, I invited my friend Chris. He just moved out here, and I know he loves NCAA football. My boss, Annie seemed a little jealous. I thought there was a good chance my mom would stay home with my sister, so about a week later I asked her if we had an extra ticket did she want to go. She jumped all over that and said yes.
Then when I told her that I did indeed have an extra ticket a few days later (maybe 5 days before the game) she said she'd get back to me on Monday. But she didn't get back to me. So on Tuesday I asked her if she could go, and she said she was going with her roommate, Kelly, to get her hair hilighted.
That's fine, I called Nikki, who I had wanted to invite to begin with, and she was really excited about coming.
So Chris, Nikki and I go to the game, have a ton of fun (UCLA kicked Washington's ass 46-16) and then went to dinner in Old Town Pasadena. Now I should explain. From the moment I invited Chris I had been telling Annie that they should come meet us in Old Town after the game, there are bars and restaurants and it would be fun. I few times I even said, "you and Kelly should come." But she never sounded interested, so I dropped it.
Alright, we're sitting at dinner, and Chris' cell phone is ringing off the hook. He had gotten quite a few calls at the game, but I wasn't sitting right next to him, and it seemed like he couldn't hear anyway. But now I am next to him, and all of these calls are from Annie.
I keep hearing him tell her that he's at dinner with Jenny and Nikki. What is her hang up here? Why is he picking up?
Anyway, she invited him to a movie. Now, his car was totalled, so I picked him, and if he goes to this movie, I will have to drop him there. Whatever.
Then, John calls and says that Annie wants to pre-order tickets for School of Rock, what time will he be done having dinner. He asks what time she wants to go to the movie, and they agree on 10:35. It was probably 9:00 or a little after at this point.
Nikki calls in to the phone that if that's John, he never calls her anymore. John then calls Nikki and leaves her a voicemail saying she should come to the movie too.
We finish dinner. Then Chris mentions that we should all go to the movie. Not like the have much choice, since I picked them both up. We go over there, buy our tickets, and wait. And wait, and wait, and wait. Then we go to get Coffee just down the block.
We also decided to call Kelly's 40 year old friend that is always hanging around with us, Jeff. I don't particularly like the guy, but Kelly's always forcing him on us saying that he needs to make friends of his own. Why a 40 year old wants to hang around kids in their early 20s is beyond me. But still, going to a movie is the kind of activity I'd rather do with the guy. So we called him, but he wasn't home.
Meanwhile, Annie, Kelly and John have gone to Black Angus to get dinner. Now granted it's only a few blocks away from the theater. But it's already 10:20 when we decide to go back and save seats.
Chris calls and says we'll be saving 6 seats, hurry up.
Quick takes:
Go back to the theater, it's full, there are 7-8 seats all the way on the right in the 3rd row (of a giant stadium theater). Grab seats, decide that we get to sit near the middle, we were first. No one wants to end up sitting next to Kelly. 10:45 they walk in the theater with Jeff. Last preview is almost over. Proceed to bitch about having to sit off to the side. Movie is lame, I laugh a few times.
Afterwards we congregate outside the theater. Chris and I tell Jeff that we're glad to see him, we called him to invite him, but he wasn't home.
Kelly interrupts and shouts out, "I think it's funny that I invite people to a movie and they invite other people." Chris says the only person he talked to was Annie. Kelly repeats what she said again, word for word. I say it's a good thing that we had the extra seat, we were only saving 6. Kelly then says, "Yea, we were wondering why Chris said 6, Jenny and Nikki weren't invited." Then she turns to Nikki and asks when she's coming to pick up an old futon that Kelly is trying to sell her (Nikki had already said that Kelly better not bring up the futon again, she's told her no). So at this point, Chris and I go off to the other side of the patio in disbelief that she'd bring up the futon right after saying that we weren't invited.
We're standing over there looking at the coming attractions posters talking about what we want to see when from across the patio we hear again, "Really, I think it's funny, I want to know why I invited people to a movie, and they invited other people." We went back over there and told her she needed to drop it. Then Nikki said something about wanting a drink, and someone said we should all go out. I suggest this little bar that Annie and Chris all of a sudden think is the greatest. I say to Nikki, "if you've never been there, we really should go."
So we split off to the cars we came in, and go over there. On the way to the car I tell Nikki and Chris that I thought it was fucking rude to call Chris and invite him to a movie when they knew that the 3 of us were having dinner together. Nikki said, "Hell yea it's fucking rude." I'm glad she agreed with the language. ;)
Alright, so now we're at the bar. And Kelly and Annie aren't talking to Nikki and I. They order drinks and then make John hold them while they go to the bathroom for 15 minutes. Jeff says he thinks that's weird since they're always complaining about how dirty the bathroom is. I told him that they were probably talking shit about us. (It turns out I was right, John told Chris later that night that they were talking shit about us all day.)
When they come out of the bathroom, the rest of us had gotten a booth. Sitting in a horseshoe were (in order): Me, Chris, Jeff, John and Nikki. Annie and Kelly come and sit at the head of the table. Kelly near me and Annie near Nikki. Annie doesn't say anything to either me or Nikki. Eventually, she leans across Nikki and invites John to come over tomorrow night. Then she leans over me and invites Chris to go out after Alias. Nikki speaks up and says that she's going to somewhere during the day. John says he wants to come... and when Annie hears this, she invites herself.
Meanwhile, Kelly has started complaining to me about how she hasn't had a day off work in 3 weeks. She's only had her current job for 2 weeks, but I don't point that out. She was given Sunday off, but told someone she was going to take Saturday off instead, and work Sunday. This girl tells her that since they are all working on a project together, that Kelly should work Saturday because if they all finish she'll get Sunday off either way. Now mind you I have no idea why she needed Saturday off since they didn't get their hair higlighted, dyed, washed, colored, styled, cut, anything (Later I told Chris that I thought that story was bullshit, and he said that they told him that it was). So now Kelly starts telling me how pissed she is at that girl because she got 2 days off for "Fucking Rosh Hashanah" and was going to get a day off for "Fucking Yom Kippur" in a span of time when Kelly didn't get a day off. I didn't say anything to her about how wrong she was. She seemed to be telling me this because she wanted me to agree with her. She kept asking if I see how she's right. In the end I decided that I wanted her to repeat it to some other Jewish person who was going to be really offended by what she said. Because I just didn't have it in me. Whereas a more sensitive person might cry or something.
On the ride home I told Nikki what she said. I told her that I didn't think Kelly was Anti-Semetic, just ignorant. That Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year and Rosh Hashanah is second. And that I think most Jews would gladly work on Christmas if asked to. She thought I should have said something to her. But I don't care if someone I don't really like stays ignorant. Plus, I was pretty pissed about her behavior up until that point. We also talked about how Chris, John, Nikki and I are all 22-24, and Annie and Kelly are 26 and 29. But they act like they're in Middle School whenever they get around a group of people. I'm over them. In my mind Annie gets 2 days to realize she treated me poorly and apologize. Otherwise, I can live without hanging out with her. Because as long as Kelly's around she's going to run off and tell little secrets and stupid shit like that doesn't happen when she's not around. It's just too bad she's my boss and I need to call her in the office on Monday about something...

Grrr
I check my voicemail every Monday and receive a schedule from work for the week starting the following Monday. Except for the fact that sometimes schedules aren't out until Tuesday and usually there are no shows going on Mondays, so it actually starts the following Tuesday.
Anyway, I was supposed to have jury duty on the second day of class this summer, so I postponed it. And the only date they offered me was Oct. 14. Now, that week sounded fair enough at the time, although I didn't particularly want Tuesday or Friday, but they gave me Tuesday.
Today I called and told the Superior Court "agent" that my boss schedules me 2 weeks in advance, so I'd have to take off 2 weeks for as long as the keep me on jury service. He laughed at me and said that that is not an excuse. Laughed!
Then I told him that last time I had jury duty, I started on December 20th. (They said I had to go on winter break, but of course, school started again on January 3rd that year.) I served one day, and then they put me on the phone system. And they finally released me on February 1st. I was in school for a month, and I never knew if I was going to be able to go to class that day, because you call in at noon and they give you an hour to report. Even better, most days they didn't update the message until after 12:30. School was an hour away, so I would have been late to jury duty had I been called in. And the way it works is, you call on Monday, that's 1 day. They tell you to call back on Thursday, that's day 2. Tuesday and Wednesday don't count in your 10 days. And they can keep you on standby to come in on an hour's notice until you've served 10 days. Actually, when they released me on February 1st, I had only served 7 days.
But I digress. I told the guy that last time I reported on December 20th and they didn't release me until February first, and that's over 6 weeks I'd have to take off of work if it goes that long again. And he laughs a second time and says that that's how it works, and then laughs some more and says my employer is legally obligated to let me off work.
And the next available date I could postpone it to was December 29th.
So I just went ahead and requested the entire month of January off.
Fuck the Superior Court!

I have bad aura.
About a month ago I mentioned this guy who said I had a good aura. Well, today I was on the set, and I noticed something tucked behind some set dressing in the audience area. And it was his business card. I lists many things, but my favorite was "Parapyschological Investigator." Naturally, I kept it.
My supervisor started freaking out that I took it. I asked why. Did she honestly think that production would care if I removed it from the set? And she said I better put it back or I would get some kind of bad aura. I didn't, though.
Put it back that is. I may have gotten bad aura.
Also, they gave away a ton of free stuff yesterday.
All of the pages take the free stuff, even though they always tell us not to.
And today's free stuff was good. They handed out gift bags with makeup and candles and some other stuff, at least 2 free cd's and 2 free dvds. And good dvds too.
But the supervisor told us not to take anything, so I didn't.
At the end of the night, I was the only person who didn't walk out with gift bags and dvds.
Everyone was asking why I didn't take anything, and I said because she told us not to.
But then I went out with one of the producers and her staff and she bought me a drink. I'm sure they would have rather had that. But the dvds will last longer.
