You mean they weren't doing this already?
I started to read this and thought, "So Yahoo had to get sued by 2 states before they would come up with this?" I mean... Duh!

Yahoo to Bar Minor-Adult Sex Chat Rooms
By SAMUEL MAULL, Associated Press Writer
Wed Oct 12, 8:38 PM ET

Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) said Wednesday it will bar chat rooms that promote sex between minors and adults and restrict all chat rooms to users 18 and older.

The changes come under an agreement with New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer and Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning.

"This is about protecting kids," Bruning said.

Spitzer said authorities did not have to resort to litigation. He said Yahoo, "acting as a good corporate citizen, ... did the right thing. We asked them to create a filter to stop this kind of thing and they have done so."

In June, while still in discussions with the attorneys general, Yahoo voluntarily closed its user-created chat rooms following complaints that some had names suggesting they facilitated illegal conduct, including sex between adults and minors.

Yahoo spokeswoman Mary Osako said Wednesday that Yahoo was still determining if and when user-created chats would be restored as it makes improvements "to enhance the user experience and compliance with our terms of service."

If they do get restored, the agreement calls for Yahoo to review the names of such rooms ahead of time and reject any deemed inappropriate. Even if a room's name is innocuous, Yahoo also will bar any whose postings encourage sex acts between adults and minors, purging such chat rooms within 24 hours from when it becomes aware of them.

"These efforts are consistent with and build upon our long-standing commitment to providing a safer and more secure online experience for consumers," Osako said.

The company also is eliminating the teen chat category and limiting usage of all chat rooms to adults, although it was not clear how the company would prevent children from signing up as adults because credit cards aren't required.

Spitzer, a Democrat running for governor next year, said he started the investigation at Bruning's urging.

"The agreement we have today is the first of its kind," Spitzer said. "We think this is an agreement that can be a template for others to use."

Bruning said the agreement means "our children are safer online and predators have fewer opportunities to prey on them."

Among the illicit chat rooms removed were those with labels such as "girls 13 & up for much older men," "8-12 yo girls for older men," and "teen girls for older fat men." Many of these were located within the "Schools and Education" and "Teen" chat categories.

An undercover investigator, posing as a 14-year-old while visiting one of those chat rooms, received 35 personal messages of a sexual nature over a single 25-minute period, the attorneys general said.

Spitzer and Bruning said they launched their investigations earlier this year after receiving tips that children had unfettered access to adult chat rooms.

Other measure announced under the agreement:

_Yahoo will make it easier to report any threats to child safety, give priority to such complaints and designate specific employees to do so.

_Yahoo will develop educational materials and feature them on the Yahoo network, promoting the safe use of chat rooms.

_Yahoo will donate $175,000 to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children's New York affiliates, and provide banner advertising to that organization targeted to teens.

    The consumer wins again.
The new housekeeper just asked my mom for $1000 cash for her family. When she said no she asked for $500. Wow that's going to be awkward going in the kitchen to get my toast out of the toaster oven.

My Motorola v710 was involved in a class action lawsuit. So now I can trade it in and get credit up to the purchase price for a new phone. Yea.

I can never get what I want.
When your team is up 41 to 14 at the start of the 4th quarter you'd think it would be safe to spend 10 minutes driving home. It doesn't matter how tired or worn out your kids are. You just hold them hostage while you shout nonsense back and forth for a constant battle to get the last word in and apparently to be louder.

Today we went to a Labor Day party at my cousin's house. She's my second cousin (making her kid my second cousin once removed.) I walked up to her husband and gave him a gift for the baby. I carried on a whole conversation with him, even though it was obvious to me he had no idea who I am. When I first met him he came to our house for Rosh Hashanah. Of all the former boyfriends I really liked the guy because I had been in a car accident that same day and he was the ONLY PERSON who even asked me if I was ok. Not even my parents or grandma or aunt or any other family.

Whatever. You don't have to know who I am if I still get to come over to your house and have free In n Out from the In n Out truck and free ice cream from your Ben & Jerry's bar and watch my family get plaster with margaritas from your free margarita bar. Mmmm, In n Out.

    Slow work day
    I have questions about life.

How do you think girls expect to support themselves? Do you think there's a point where they decide they're going to get married and depend on their husbands for at least some support?

Do you think that in a guy's future plans he ever considers that he might be supporting 2 people? At what point do you think that kicks in?

Do you think girls think that they'll be supporting themselves and possibly someone else? At what point do you think that starts or stops?

I wonder how many people feel paying rent is throwing money away. At what age do people realize how much money they really need to be earning to afford a home loan? When do they start saving?

I worry about people who have reached my age and don't think about these things.
(Ok, mainly the housing stuff, I don't really care if people ever want to get married or not.)

    McWardriving
I tried to update yesterday from the McDonald's drive-thru, but there was no wifi to steal.

The professor is 5 minutes late, how much longer do I need to sit here?

Two people are "debating" Dred Scott. The problem with the debate is, the girl knows absolutely nothing. She's getting all her facts by asking questions to the guy she's debating with. They are both idiots.

Ok, now he's ended with, "So my point is if not for that decision, slavery would still be around today."

(I disagree, because, for one reason, modern technology has obliterated the need for labor on that scale. And for another, are there any working plantations or farms left in former slave states using manual labor at all? There are farms in California, but California was admitted to the union as a free state. Period.)

Costco wouldn't take my insurance so I ordered from 1-800-CONTACTS. It kind of sucked and I don't think I'll do it anymore.

That was totally random. I just noticed the box lying around while I was waiting for Blogger to login, so that's why.

My mother is snoring on the couch with the lights and TV. I'm thinking I'll just say "fuck you," leave everything as it is and go to bed. She sucks and deserves that.

Nothing else really. I probably should have waited until tomorrow to make a post. Not sure if I'll bother again in the month on August, and I so dislike having months missing from the archive. Purely for symmetry.

I have books to buy and homework to do. Can't do the homework without the books but I don't want to spend the money. I wish professors were required to choose books in the public library system. This quarter I'm zero for five. That is so pathetic.

If I buy them all on Amazon it will cost me $160 for 5 weeks. That's ridiculous to only be assigned a fraction of each book.

I want to be an elected official just so I can get back at the educational system in this country.

Creepy voice on CSI. Hope I can fall asleep now!

    Asses
My new Manager is a total micromanager.

So far in 2 days he's emailed more times than my last manager did in the previous 7 months!

Whenever I leave my desk for a break or the 2 times I went to the printer today when I got back he was there asking why I wasn't at my desk.

Yesterday in the first 3 hours I was at work he had emailed me 6 times. Then 3 1/2 hours later we had a team meeting, and the second sentence out of his mouth was "I'm not a micromanager." Although he did say if we're doing something wrong he'll tell us.

So far there has been no actual evidence of me being wrong, just me knowing the company policies and procedures better than he does.

I suppose I'm partly to blame for that, seeing as how I trained him a few months ago.

He also said in the meeting he won't talk about anyone behind their back. To be fair, I should stop talking shit about him until I know if that's really true.

My previous manager told me that he made the new guy aware that I need to increase my call volume, reduce my time between calls and my attitude when not on the phones. The new guy told me he wasn't told anything about any of us so he'll give us all a clean slate. So which is it? One of them is lying, and I know which one.

Another thing that really irked me at the meeting was he felt the need to say "The reason I got this job was I happened to have a really good interview." Way to instill confidence. Since then the other managers have been busting their asses talking about how qualified he is.

And by the way, I have no problem with him getting promoted. He has previous supervisor experience. But he should have to go through managerial training with this company to learn the policies and how the automated systems work before just being tossed out into a position where he's supposed to help us follow the company policies and do the right things for the customers. Instead he just makes up answers.

I've lost where I was going with this besides complaining. Time to go to bed so I can be on time for work tomorrow and wait for the other shoe to drop.

    SDCC Sux!
First, the shuttle doesn't show up. We wait, and wait. The sign says every 8 minutes, but it lies. After 22 minutes a shuttle drives by. The sign says it's our shuttle. I managed to read the name of our stop as it sped by completely full. They could at least slow down and let us know it's full before barrelling by. Then I missed the trolley because I had to go to 3 places that would change a 20 for a small purchase.

Finally I arrive at the Convention Center 35 minutes only to discover Comic-con gave my badge away! Motherfuckers! Someone showed up yesterday, gave my name and they gave them my badge. Motherfuckers!

I am sitting here, holding on to a piece of paper that says I must have this sheet, my confirmation number, my credit card and my ID to claim my badge. Someone had NONE of that and they gave it away. So now I'm just assed out sitting in the hallway until my friends decide to come give me my badge. But they're in a panel, and they don't want to right now.
